60 Years of Miffy

Miffy turns 60 this year!

Miffy was “born” on 21 June 1955 when Dick Bruna first drew her to entertain his young son whilst on a rainy seaside holiday in Holland. She shares her birthday with Prince William, and was born in the same year as Rowan Atkinson, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis, Olga Corbet and Bill Gates.3

The Miffy books are now published in more than 50 languages and have sold more than 85 million copies worldwide. As well as starring in her own TV series, musical and movie, Miffy also appears on merchandise across five continents.

4

‘miffy’, the first book in the much loved series, was published in 1955, and over 30 Miffy more stories have followed. To celebrate her 60th anniversary in 2015, Dick Bruna’s Miffy stories are being refreshed for a modern British audience, with newly translated texts by award winning British poet, Tony Mitton.

This month ‘miffy is crying’ and ‘miffy and melanie’ are due to be republished, and lots more Miffy books are set to be published later this year including ‘miffy at the playground’ and ‘queen miffy’ in February, a special 60th anniversary edition of ‘miffy’s birthday’ in June and ‘miffy at the seaside’ & ‘miffy in the tent’ in July. A fun set of Miffy activity books will also be published through the year. This follows on from the selection of the books that were republished last year, including ‘miffy at the gallery’ and ‘miffy and the new baby’.

5

Miffy might have changed a little over the years, but the principles that make her loved across the world have stayed the same. The same simple, bright colours are used: red, yellow, blue and green. And there is still a strong black outline – painted with a brush rather than drawn with a pen.

Miffy will be celebrating her birthday throughout 2015, through exhibitions, a new musical, a TV show, commemorative stamps, floral displays and children’s parties.

6

In the UK, Miffy is partnering with premature baby charity Bliss, to raise funds for the one in nine babies and their families that require its support every year, and you can read more about this HERE. Activity will culminate over her birthday weekend, 20–21st June 2015.

Don’t forget to wish Miffy a happy birthday! She’d love to hear from you!

An art parade celebrating 60 years of Miffy the bunny goes on display in Miffy’s home country of the Netherlands, and also in Japan, from 1 May 2015. 60 statues measuring 1.8 metres have been decorated by a variety of artists from those countries. In contrast to the usual tight control kept over reproductions of Dick Bruna’s global icon, the artists were given free reign to create their own interpretation of the character.

The resulting collection of eclectic and dynamic statues reflects a wide range of artistic influences, including elements of Dutch culture such as the ‘Royal Delft’ statue by De Koninklijke. More avant garde designs include Wendelien Daan’s photograph-covered Miffy (‘Miffy transformer’), Hans van Bentem’s intimidating ‘Gothic’ bunny and Carli Hermès’ gold ‘Sunshine’ Miffy. Among the 60 artists is Dick Bruna’s daughter, Madelon Bruna.

The influences of the designs run the full spectrum, from Sebastian Masuda’s ‘Colourful Rebellion’ inspired by Harajuku in Tokyo, to Bas Kosters’ ‘Heading towards a suspicious showdown’ inspired by Leslie Charteris’ Saint novels.

Fashion is a key theme within many of the designs, with several of the artists choosing to focus on the attire of their Miffy statue, including a carrot-themed dress from Makoto Oozu, a knitted cardigan from Kesennuma Knitting Co., and a gold charm chain accessory from Studio Job.

The materials used on the statues are varied too, from Makoto Koizumi’s wooden ‘hakoirimusume’ Miffy to Kodue Hibino’s fabric collage bunny (‘piece by peace’).

Artist Wendelien Daan comments: ‘I see Miffy as an abstract. Like a letter or a triangle or a circle. You can do what you like with it, but it’s still a circle. Or, in this case, it’s still Miffy’, and the distinctive shape of the statues stands true to this mantra.

Ever since the books first appeared in Japan in the early 1960s, Miffy has remained hugely popular – her simple silhouette chiming with the country’s love of minimalism. Several of the artists have chosen to explore this minimalist theme including Rob Scholte with his ying & yang-style statue entitled ‘Grijs’, Kenjiro Sano with his ghost-esque Miffy, aptly named ‘Het spook nijntje’, Atsuki Kikuchi with his ‘Spatial Miffy’ featuring bold primary shapes & colours, and finally Richard Hutten with his simple, one-eared ‘nijntje’.

If you’re holidaying in the Netherlands this summer, make sure you visit the city of Utrecht – Miffy’s birthplace – where the exhibition ’60 Years of Miffy’ is currently on display at the Centraal Museum. Packed full of interactive activities to keep families with young children engaged in creative fun, it is a stunning show celebrating Miffy’s birthday.

IMG_1052

The exhibition has been specifically designed from a child’s perspective, and features giant interactive 3D structures throughout. For adults, it immediately feels as if you’re stepping into a brightly coloured dream world where everything is larger than life. Giant Miffy storybooks hang from the ceiling, whilst other books form huge free-standing displays to walk around, with their open pages showing images of Dick Bruna at work.

There are eleven recognisable elements in the exhibition which explore a typical birthday celebration, including dressing up in party outfits, buying presents, making birthday decorations and eating birthday cake – making your visit into one big party.

IMG_1050

Children can guess what is inside the display of giant presents by smelling, feeling and listening to the contents. They can wander into Miffy’s wardrobe and decorate her party dress, or sit down and make her a birthday card. They can sing a birthday song or play along on a drum or tambourine. Finally they can crawl inside a giant birthday cake that even smells like cake!

For a trip down memory lane, parents have the chance to see a rare display of the earliest manuscripts of miffy and miffy at the zoo – two of Dick Bruna’s first stories he wrote in 1955. You can also see some vintage merchandise – the first Miffy toys and puzzles from the 1970s onwards.

’60 Years of Miffy’ is at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht until 20 September 2015. For more details, visit: http://centraalmuseum.nl

Miffy Goes Down the Rabbit Hole

1Miffy’s recent 60th birthday celebrations in her home country of the Netherlands included a special appearance at the Down the Rabbit Hole Festival, a three day event in the southern province of Gelderland, from 26-28 June.

Aimed at teens and young adults, Down the Rabbit Hole won Best New European Festival in its first year in 2014. With its distinctive arty feel, the festival was the perfect platform to portray Miffy’s iconic design to a native audience already deeply familiar with the little bunny character as an intrinsic part of their early childhood.

A 5-metre high blow-up Miffy was kept hidden underground during each day of the festival. At night, much to the delight of festival-goers, she slowly emerged, was inflated, and then illuminated with colourful projected artwork – creating what looked like a giant, funky night-light. As campers went to bed, they couldn’t help but be filled with warm, happy childhood memories of Miffy, seen now in a new, creatively beautiful light.

Here are a few facts about this classic little bunny to celebrate her anniversary:

Birthday Cake Recipe

Miffy’s favourite part of a party is socialising with her friends and eating some delicious cake! Everyone knows that a Miffy cake is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion. Today, Miffy will be baking a cake to mark a friend’s first birthday – but you could change the decorations to make it for any age!

The recipe:

  • Make your fondant Miffy a little while before the big day, so the decorations have time to dry before going on top of the cake.
  • Use white fondant to roll out shapes for the head and ears, then used a combination of golden yellow and lemon yellow fondant for the dress before shaping them out. Use a cocktail stick to connect the head to the body. Pop a cocktail stick in the bottom so you will be able to attach Miffy to the cake. When Miffy has been assembled, use an edible marker to add the details to her face.
  • Make a #1 out of orange fondant and pop a cocktail stick in the bottom so it can easily be secured onto the cake. You could swap the #1 out for any number depending on the age. Then pop your fondant somewhere safe until the night before the occasion as it is time to make the cake.
  • You could use a basic cake recipe or make it a little more exciting with a rainbow cake! All you need to do is make a vanilla cake batter, separate it out into four bowls and add a different food colouring into each batter. Then bake each coloured batter in four different 10-inch cake pans.
  • After the cakes have baked and cooled, you can fill each layer with lemon whipped cream. Just add some lemon juice and lemon zest to freshly whipped cream.
  • To frost the cake, cover the top and sides with a coating of buttercream frosting, let it rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes, and then add a final coat and smooth it out with a spatula.
  • This step is optional, but you could pipe a beaded border along the bottom of the cake, using a disposable pastry bag fitted with a medium round tip to make it look extra fancy!
  • Finally, all you need to do is add the adorable fondant toppers to the cake. Use a bit of frosting on the bottom of the toppers to keep them in place.

Miffy’s 68th birthday is on the 21st June! In 1955, Dick Bruna first created Miffy and since she has brought joy to many fans around the world. To celebrate this special day, we have put together a list of things to do to celebrate Miffy.

Get out into the garden

Miffy adores spending time in her beautiful garden, and she’s shared so many gardening tips and tricks with us over the years. Why not celebrate Miffy by drawing pictures of her favourite flower, tulips? You can also try planting your very own flowers – cherry treespansies, and snowdrops. Or explore her classic book, “Miffy’s Garden.”

Get baking

Birthdays are all about sharing sweet treats, and Miffy is no exception! The baking-loving bunny has shared some delightful recipes on her blog, including hot cross bunnies, gingerbread bunnies, and irresistible carrot cupcakes. Why not whip up one of Miffy’s favourite recipes? Don’t forget to tag Miffy in your culinary creations to spread the birthday cheer!

Treat yourself

It’s Miffy’s special day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spoil yourself too! Explore the Miffy Shop and discover a range of personalised goodies that will make your heart hop with joy. Whether it’s a Miffy bag, water bottle, pencil case, or mug, you can find the perfect item to showcase your love for our delightful bunny.

Wish Miffy a happy birthday

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to send Miffy your warmest birthday wishes on the 21st June! Whether it’s through a social media post, a DM on Instagram, or even a hand-drawn card, let Miffy know just how much joy she has brought into your life. After all, birthdays are all about love and appreciation!

Let’s make this a day to remember and show our favourite bunny just how much she means to all of us. Happy birthday, Miffy! Here’s to many more years of joy, laughter, and carrot-filled adventures!
